Purpose
Hacker News is a public message board at news.ycombinator.com, run since 2007 by the startup investor Y Combinator. Readers submit links — mostly about software, science, and building companies — and vote them up or reply. The front page is the ranked result, identical for everyone who loads it at the same moment.
That page is compact; the activity behind it is not. Atlas preserves the exact stories, ranks, points, comments, snapshots, and observation limits needed to examine that activity with more context.
The current research corpus contains about 49 million public items. Scheduled readings were captured every ~5 minutes at the measured median across 399 adjacent intervals; gaps over an hour are excluded rather than averaged in.
It is an independent research interface—not a replacement for Hacker News, a recommendation engine, or a score for story quality. If you are new to any of this, start here.
Reading discipline
Every analytical view keeps its selected group and limitation nearby. Rank describes placement at a moment. Points describe accumulated votes. Comments describe discussion volume, and where one is quoted it is the opening comment a discussion answered most — a count, not a judgement of what was worth saying. None of those measures alone establishes importance, approval, accuracy, or impact.
Where the available evidence cannot support a reading, Atlas shows the boundary or a genuine empty state.
